    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is COVID-19?

A coronavirus is a common virus that causes an infection in your respiratory system. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the newly discovered coronavirus. COVID-19 also called the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) affects different people in different ways and can cause illness that ranges from mild to severe, depending on pre-existing health conditions

Is there more than one strain of COVID-19?

A virus can change and mutate as it infects people. Recent studies show that there are more than one strain of COVID-19 and that mutation leads to changes in the intensity of how infectious the virus can be. A Chinese study of 103 COVID-19 cases suggests that the virus has responded similarly. Research continues to uncover the complexity of the virus and what all of this means.

    How is COVID-19 transmitted?

COVID-19 majorly spreads from person to person through the respiratory droplets released when the person sneezes, coughs or talks. If the virus particles linger in the air for long, air borne transmission can also occur. Although it is rare, it can potentially infect others who are in the same area even when the infected person is far away.

The high rate of its transmission makes it necessary that we take precautions and keep ourselves updated.

    Who should get tested?

How can you stop the spread of Coronavirus?

Although there is no vaccination available to prevent COVID-19 yet, it is necessary to take the following precautions to reduce your risk of infection.

    • Wash your hands frequently: Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps kill the viruses on your hands. Preferably use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and soap.
    • Practice social distancing: Try and keep distance between yourself and others of at least 6 feet, especially if you have a higher risk of serious illness and are present in a public area.
    • Avoid mass gatherings and large events
    • Cover your nose and mouth in public: Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Remember to dispose of the used tissue right away and wash your hands. Wear a cloth face mask that properly covers your mouth and nose when in a public area such as a grocery store.
    • Don’t touch your face: It is necessary to avoid touching your face, eyes and mouth as coronaviruses can live on surfaces you touch for several hours and if you touch your face with the infected hands, the virus can easily get into your body.

Clean and disinfect: Avoid sharing household items like dishes, bedding etc if you or any of your family members are sick. Clean and disinfect surfaces that you touch often, such as doorknobs, light switches, etc regularly.
